The thinking behind version two

These are observed patterns on established DTC brands’ own sites, reviewed September 13, 2026. The ESAS applications are design hypotheses, not evidence that a particular module caused those brands’ growth. Their ingredient standards are not interchangeable with ESAS.

01 / “I can’t smell it online.”

PHLUR: make discovery a clear first purchase.

Its discovery page shows the sample count, price, reviews, and a route from trial to a full-size fragrance.

Applied to ESAS: moved the discovery module ahead of the grid; made six scents and $50 visible; added a try-first link in the opening. ESAS credit terms remain excluded until reconciled.

02 / “I don’t know which scent is me.”

DedCool: let preferences guide browsing.

DedCool offers a scent quiz and shopping paths organized by notes, including floral, fresh, woodsy, and musky.

Applied to ESAS: kept direct scent-family filters and added a changing sensory explanation for each family. Shoppers can explore immediately, without completing a quiz.

03 / “What will it feel like to wear?”

By Rosie Jane: translate notes into a feeling.

Rosie’s page pairs a skin-scent description with notes, size choices, ratings, and customer reactions.

Applied to ESAS: added one sensory sentence per card and restored real ESAS ratings and counts. The first prototype had omitted reviews already present on the original.

04 / “What makes the claim believable?”

Ritual: let people inspect the ingredients.

Ritual makes ingredient traceability a dedicated, explorable part of its shopping experience.

Applied to ESAS: added a direct ingredient button on each card. It opens the full disclosed formula for that scent. Named botanicals and natural-origin ingredients make the explanation concrete.
